About

Joining the Doc Lab Program in order to get a minor in Documentary Production will open an innovative and creative filmmaking world for students in which they can interweave image, sound, and narrative in order to tell stirring and poignant stories that reflect reality and help build a more just and equitable world.

Through their course work and hands-on projects, students become acquainted with the history of documentary filmmaking and with the theoretical thinking that has shaped the conversations that academics, critics, and the culture at large have around non-fiction filmmaking.

The Doc Lab features award-winning faculty with a wide range of experiences who teach in small classes that allow students to form creative bonds with each other and to receive personal attention from their instructors. Unlike most filmmaking programs around the US, the Doc Lab introduces students to the films and filmmaking practices of diverse populations, including the voices and work of women, queer, international, and racially diverse filmmakers and theorists. Our program also places a strong focus on the ethics of capturing the world from behind the camera and later editing a story from that material.

After completing the program, students can pursue careers not only in the film industry but also in the non-profit and private sectors, taking their visual storytelling skills and using them to tell the stories that shape our culture.
